NYTEX® 4700: Top tip for tyres
Secure supply, improved fuel efficiency, and a smaller carbon footprint make NYTEX® 4700 an attractive alternative for tyre manufacturers struggling to find formulation solutions for replacing Treated Distillate Aromatic Extract (TDAE) oil in their high-performance rubber compounds.

“Whether due to trade sanctions or discontinued Group I production, many tyre manufacturers are currently finding it difficult to source sufficient volumes of TDAE to support their production. However, Nynas’ tyre oil NYTEX 4700 offers a very simple solution to this problem,” says Carlo Silvestri, Senior Technical Advisor, Tyre and Rubber Oils at Nynas.
A complete and readily accessible alternative to TDAE in rubber production, NYTEX 4700 requires no reformulation and offers impressive performance in all types of tyres. “Depending on how you look at it, NYTEX 4700 and TDAE are quite different outside of a tyre, but they do exactly the same job in the tyre,” Carlo Silvestri explains.
Having spent what should count as a lifetime at one of the largest and most recognised global tyre manufacturers, Carlo Silvestri knows what he is talking about.
NYTEX 4700 is a high viscosity Naphthenic Black Oil which exhibits a valuable combination of high solvency and low volatility. High solvency ensures good compatibility with a wide range of synthetic and natural rubber polymers, and low volatility makes the oil suitable for most polymer compounding and processing operations.
“Hence, it has become a popular choice among manufacturers, and it has been approved for several different applications within the rubber and tyre industry. Recently we have seen requests also to replace RAE oil (Residual Aromatic Extract), where with a minimum of compound tuning, NYTEX 4700 also brings the advantage of reducing energy consumption due to the lower storage temperature,” he says.
Providing a glass transition temperature (Tg) similar to that of TDAE, NYTEX 4700 is suitable for different parts of tyres, both sidewalls and treads, and contributes to an excellent year-round performance.
Field tests on real tyres made with NYTEX 4700, that were carried out by an external laboratory, produced results indicating improvements to both traction and rolling resistance. Better traction performance on wet surfaces ensures safer driving conditions, and a lower rolling resistance leads to reduced fuel consumption and carbon footprint.
