Spectacular road project
Nordøyanae is the collective name of a group of beautiful islands situated off the western coast of Norway. In order to facilitate communications and contribute to the region’s economic growth, a new land link will connect the islands to the mainland.
The new road – Nordøyvegen – includes three tunnels totaling 13 km in length which are beneath the sea, 8 km of road with three bridges. Some of the road sections will be constructed on new land consisting of fillings.
The project, which will be carried out by the construction company Skanska on behalf of the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, is certified in accordance with the international sustainability standard CEEQUAL.
Work will be starting this spring and the completed Nordøyvegen is scheduled to open in 2022. The contract is worth around NOK 3 billion (approx. EUR 310 million).
“I’d say that this is Norway’s most spectacular road project. We’re in amazing natural surroundings and will be using virtually every kind of construction technology,” says Are Eliassen, Skanska Norway’s project manager for Nordøyvegen.
