Our research spans both pure and applied science. On the pure side, dedicated laboratories explore the intrinsic properties of raw materials – knowledge that fuels smarter product development. On the applied side, Nynas research teams translate this insight into real-world solutions with the aid of advanced laboratories for greases, adhesives, bitumen, rubber and transformers, as well as pilot scale hydrotreatment units and micro-reactors.

Innovation is a joint enterprise. That’s why, over the years, we have developed a global knowledge network, partnering with leading universities, research institutes, customers, industrial partners, governmental bodies and technical organisations worldwide.
We co-design, test and validate solutions in laboratories, field trials and joint research programmes. Our experts actively contribute to scientific publications, international conferences and industry standards, including leadership roles at CIGRÉ, strong involvement with the European Lubricating Grease Institute and Eurobitume, and participation in organisations such as FEICA, UEIL, IEC and ICIS.
Driven by sustainability
Innovation and sustainability go hand in hand at Nynas. Our R&D investments support the transition to a more sustainable society by expanding circular product offerings, exploring renewable feedstocks and continuously improving production processes to reduce emissions.
In 2022, Nynas became the first company to offer the electrical industry a fully circular re-refined dielectric liquid: NYTRO® RR 900X. After decades of service, used transformer fluids are collected, re-refined at our Nynäshamn facility and returned to the market with performance equivalent to virgin products.
In the bitumen segment, NYPOL® RE represents another major innovation. The result of extensive R&D, it delivers the durability and elasticity of polymer-modified bitumen while achieving the carbon footprint of an unmodified binder, making it a groundbreaking innovation for more sustainable asphalt applications.
