Ancona, Italy
As part of Nynas wide-ranging research and development initiatives, there are several collaborations under way with both customers and research institutes. One of these is a research project with the University of Ancona in Eastern Italy.
The project started back in 2016, when Nynas welcomed a student from the university. The next step came a couple of years later in the form of a joint three-year doctoral project that focused on advanced characterisation of the properties of bitumen binders containing a renewable biogenic hydrocarbon material. The results are strongly indicative that asphalt road pavements with such binders are durable and fully reusable.
The successful collaboration has now led to a decision by Nynas and the University of Ancona to jointly finance a second doctoral research project with the main objective to further explore different types of renewable material in asphalt pavements. Some aspects that will be investigated are long-term performance and carbon footprint.
