Enabling the energy transition

With a rapidly electrifying society, transformers play a critical role in the energy transition. Nynas provides the advanced insulating transformer liquids required to keep the grid stable, efficient and future-ready.

75%

Rising electricity demand Global electricity demand is projected to grow by 75% until 2050.

The power of Naphthenics

Nynas naphthenic transformer oils bring a unique combination of properties critical for modern grid performance.

Superior Cooling Efficiency

Low viscosity enhances convection and reduces thermal stress.

Excellent Low-Temperature Performance

Keeps systems running in Arctic, offshore and winter conditions.

Reliable Dielectric Strength

Stable insulation under both AC and DC stress.

Low Viscosity & High Solvency

Supports ageing stability and efficient heat transfer.

Wide Application Range

From distribution transformers to HVDC converter units.

More complex energy flows

Growing need for transformer fluids that can handle high thermal stress, fast load changes and more frequent cycling.

  • Sharp increase in transmission needs, with grid investment required to nearly double by 2030 to meet demand
  • Weather-dependent renewable generation creates steep ramps up and down
  • Grid congestion becomes more common
  • Improved interconnections between countries to balance surplus or deficit
  • Global energy storage battery capacity expected to increase six-fold by 2030

More transformers

By 2050, solar and wind may supply up to 70% of global electricity – driving sustained transformer demand.

  • Offshore wind farms can require up to 100 transformers per project
  • Solar parks use distribution transformers at every cluster of inverters
  • Floating wind demands specialised offshore transformers
  • Renewable-heavy grids need more system transformers for balancing

Long-distance transmission

HVDC converter transformers experience higher electrical stress and therefore require insulating fluids with:

  • Exceptional dielectric strength
  • Stable DC ageing behaviour
  • High thermal performance
  • Controlled moisture and gas solubility NYTRO® 10XN is widely used as a global reference insulating liquid for HVDC applications.

Decentralising the market

Electric power systems are moving from a few central power stations to millions of smaller sources, such as Rooftop PV, industrial solar and wind, community batteries and local microgrids. This shift increases the number of transformers required at every level.

Circularity and recycling – a major opportunity

Re-refining transformer liquids significantly increases resource efficiency and reduces the product carbon footprint. Nynas is a leader in circular insulating liquids with NYTRO® RR 900X, made entirely from re-refined recycled raw material.

KONČAR – D&ST and Nynas supply sustainable transformer technology to Sweden’s first wooden substation

Nynas recently joined KONČAR - Distribution and Special Transformers Inc. (KONČAR – D&ST) in Zagreb for the Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) of a power transformer destined for a truly innovative grid project. The unit will be installed at E.ON’s new transformer station in Karlshammar, southern Sweden – the country’s first power station built primarily in wood.
