As the autonmotive industry moves towards electrification and carbon neutrality, every component in the supply chain is being re-evaluated – including the oils used in tyre production. For manufacturers, sourcing a reliable and responsible alternative to TDAE has become critical.
“We’re seeing a shift, not only because of supply limitations,” says Annika Girod, Marketing Director at Nynas, “but also because manufacturers are under pressure to reduce their indirect emissions. That’s where NYTEX 4700 – and especially NYTEX 4700 EVO – come in, offering both performance and climate benefits.”
In a recent comprehensive sustainability assessment, independent researchers evaluated the lifecycle impact of NYTEX 4700 in tyre applications compared to traditional TDAE and RAE oils. The study found that switching to NYTEX 4700 can significantly reduce energy consumption and thus typically also greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions over the tyre’s full lifecycle.
The oil’s compatibility with natural and synthetic rubbers, combined with its low glass transition temperature (Tg) similar to TDAE, ensures all-season performance – without compromising rolling resistance or traction.
“NYTEX 4700 is now also available in an EVO version,” adds Annika Girod. “This allows for an instant and verifiable reduced product carbon footprint (PCF), offering even greater sustainability impact.”
The EVO concept makes it easy for formulators to reduce their raw material footprint without the need for massive development work, lengthy conversion times, or compromises on performance. “It’s the same high performance as our legacy grade NYTEX 4700, with a significantly lower PCF – all without any need for reformulations or re-approvals,” says Marika Rangstedt, Sustainability Manager at Nynas.
By using biogenic feedstock in the manufacturing process, EVO products enable customers to get the NYNAS legacy products with significantly reduced PCFs. Both the effect, which is allocated to the EVO line by mass balance, and the product carbon footprint reduction, which is calculated by means of a lifecycle assessment, are verified by independent third parties.
To confirm NYTEX 4700’s real-world performance, Nynas commissioned independent tyre testing under standard European conditions. The tyres produced using NYTEX 4700 demonstrated improved wet breaking, lower rolling resistance and comparable or better snow and ice grip compared to most alternatives.
“Better traction means safer tyres. Lower rolling resistance means better fuel economy – and that’s where manufacturers can capture real sustainability gains,” adds Marika Rangstedt.
NYTEX 4700 is already approved and used for multiple tyre and rubber applications, from sidewalls to treads, and is increasingly being selected to replace not just TDAE, but also RAE oils. The product’s high solvency supports a wide formulation window, simplifying the switch.
“It’s a solution that works in production and out on the road, but also in sustainability reporting,” says Marika Rangstedt.
Nynas has committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and aims to do so throughout the value chain. Products like NYTEX 4700 EVO are part of this roadmap, not just for Nynas, but for customers across the mobility sector.
