Progress and targets to 2030 & 2050

Nynas has set a long-term ambition to achieve net-zero scope 1, 2 and 3 GHG emissions by 2050. Emissions are monitored in accordance with the GHG Protocol, using 2017 as the baseline year. In addition, we have set near-term emission reduction targets for 2030.

CO₂-eq emissions in thousand metric tonnes 2025 emissions 2017 emissions (baseline) Time-bound target Change vs 2017 Target status
Scope 1 + Scope 2 (market-based) 215 550 50% reduction from 2017 baseline by 2030 -60%
Scope 3 3,124 5,631 25% reduction from 2017 baseline by 2030 -45%

Note: Following the limited assurance process, both Scope 3 baseline and reporting year emissions were adjusted. These adjustments reflect improvements in underlying data quality and methodological refinements identified during the assurance review.

The reported climate data has been subject to limited assurance. The criteria used for the preparation of the reported greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions comprise the accounting principles, methodologies and guidance defined by Nynas (the “Reporting Criteria”). These are based on the GHG Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard (2004), the GHG Protocol Scope 2 Guidance (2015), and the GHG Protocol Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) Accounting and Reporting Standard (2011).

Drivers of emissions reduction

Reductions achieved to date are primarily driven by operational optimisation and efficiency improvements across core assets:

  • Energy efficiency improvements at Nynäshamn, Gothenburg and across depots
  • Operational optimisation measures implemented across production sites
  • Mothballing of the Harburg site, significantly reducing overall emissions footprint
  • Scope 3 improvements driven by upstream sourcing optimisation and downstream benefits from more sustainable products
  • Ongoing EU ETS management and monitoring, supporting emissions control and accountability
