Brains of Nynas: Elisabeth Bemm

Elisabeth Bemm joined Nynas in 2016 as manager for ProTech, specialised in the development of Nynas refining process technology utilising the advanced Pilot Plant facility. Find out what's on her mind.

27 % R&D AND INNOVATION

I am grateful for the innovative and dedicated engineers at the Nynas Process Technology R&D department (ProTech) who evaluate ideas in our Pilot Plant and contribute to getting them realised in full-scale. Innovation is usually a social process where ideas are challenged from different perspectives and further developed. It is amazing to take part in discussions with these bright minds when listening to and learning from each other.

Elisabeth Bemm

Manager Process Technology

After earning a B.Sc. in Chemistry and a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry at the University of Gothenburg, followed by a postdoctoral year at Stockholm University, Elisabeth started her career at the Swedish Defense Research Agency (FOI) in 1995. At FOI, where she held various leadership positions related to R&D, leading complex national and international studies in cooperation with stakeholders at FMV, the defense industry and the Swedish Armed Forces. Elisabeth joined Nynas in 2016 as manager for ProTech specialised in the development of Nynas refining process technology for production of specialty products utilising the advanced Pilot Plant facility.

17 % COLLABORATION

For most of my career, I have been working with crossfunctional collaborations based on the motto of embracing diverse teams and avoiding working in isolated silos or uniform groups. At Nynas, we work with complex activities involving different parts of the company. Cross-functional collaborations are suitable for connecting contributions from different parts and aligning efforts towards joint goals.

22 % Sustainability

It is a great privilege to be part of the work to find solutions for Nynas, supporting the transition towards a more sustainable society. At ProTech, we are busy running R&D studies related to the production of Nynas’ long-lasting, and thus inherently sustainable, specialty products made from both crude oil and alternative feedstocks.

19 % Health and safety

Throughout my career, I have been working with R&D activities related to energetic materials and chemical process industry, gaining a solid understanding of the importance of assessing risks before work begins. To ensure safe and reliable operation of the lab-scale units and personal safety for everyone working in the Pilot Plant, it is important to consider HSE aspects and not to rely only on the automatic safety systems.

15 % Family, art and music

In my leisure time, I love to create artworks such as oil paintings and have joined a group of enthusiastic amateur painters in Nynäshamn. Music is also an important part of my life and I have been playing all sorts of music on my piano for as long as I can remember. Even though our children have now grown up and left home, family still means more than anything!
