In December 2006, the European Parliament and Council agreed on a new chemical regulation: Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals (REACH). The regulation came into force on June 1, 2007 in all Member States of the European Community.
REACH is based on the idea that the industry itself is best placed to ensure that the chemicals it manufactures and puts on the market in the EU do not adversely affect human health or the environment.
The industry is therefore required to have knowledge of the intrinsic properties of the substances in use and the risks associated with them. Industrial users of chemical substances (so-called downstream users) also have obligations in REACH, including communicating back to the supplier on, for instance, current uses and risk reducing measurements. This is a major difference to the former legislation, where the communication was only one-way: down the supply chain.
REACH is implemented in steps and as of 2018, registrations for all substances manufactured or imported above one ton per year shall be completed for all substances. High volume substances such as many petroleum substances had to be registered in 2010.
A large part of Nynas' work with REACH is being conducted within Concawe, which is coordinating the Substance Information Exchange Forum (SIEF) activities for petroleum substances. Concawe member companies actively contributed to the effort and Nynas is engaged in many of the CONCAWE/REACH working groups.
Registration of Nynas products
Nynas has so far registered all petroleum substances that are currently manufactured and imported by Nynas in Europe.
Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC)
Nynas monitors amendments to the candidate list for SVHC. As of 2016 Nynas products do not contain any substance included in the candidate list. In case a substance used in any Nynas product will be included on the candidate list, Nynas will communicate this via our Safety Data Sheets.
REACH like chemical legislations are developing in many countries around the world. Nynas is actively following such developments to secure compliance.
