Instant reduction

By replacing a Nynas product with an identical one from the EVO line, customers can instantly and significantly lower their product carbon footprint while maintaining the same high performance.

Nynas products play a vital role in the transition to a sustainable society. Throughout their life cycle, they can help save energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared to many other available options.

“The sustainable transition is a top priority for us, and we are currently working on various solutions to expand our portfolio of offerings, for example, through exploration of new circular feedstocks,” says Marika Rangstedt, Sustainability Manager at Nynas.

However, sourcing sustainable products is a complex process that often involves trade-offs, such as reformulations or compromised performance.

“We know that many of our customers looking to reduce their raw material carbon footprint find the availability of adequate bio-based or circular solutions to be limited,” notes Annika Girod, Marketing Director at Nynas.

“Identifying drop-in solutions is a major challenge, and the available solutions often require significant R&D work to align with existing or new raw materials and meet reformulation or customer re-approval requirements.”

Even if all of the above are completed, there may still be a need to compromise on certain functions or the overall performance of the end product. To address these challenges, Nynas has launched EVO — an evolution of our most popular naphthenic products, with a significantly reduced product carbon footprint.

“The whole idea behind the EVO concept is to make it easy for formulators to reduce their raw material footprint without the need for massive development work, lengthy conversion times, or performance compromises,” explains Marika Rangstedt. “It’s the same high performance with a significantly lower product carbon footprint — all without any reformulations or re-approvals needed.”

By using biogenic feedstock in the manufacturing process, most EVO products achieve a 25% reduction in carbon footprint. Both the effect, which is allocated to the EVO line by mass balance, and the product carbon footprint reduction, which is calculated by means of a life cycle assessment, are verified by independent third parties.

“In most cases, every tonne of Nynas product that is replaced with EVO comes with a 25% lower product carbon footprint, enabling our customers to reduce the environmental impact of their products,” says Marika Rangstedt.

If oil constitutes a significant share of the overall formulation and raw material plays a substantial effect in the customer's product the outcome will also be positive for the end user.

“Another angle on the benefits of using EVO is the reduction of the Scope 3, category 1 greenhouse gas emissions of the customer.”

The EVO line includes all Nynas specialty product segments, offering solutions for end uses such as power transformers, lubricants, tyres and adhesives. It is part of ReSolution, Nynas' collection of products designed for sustainable performance.

“EVO is yet another important step forward in Nynas' continuous effort to help our customers on their sustainability journey and reduce their carbon footprint within their value chain. We are proud to deliver such a significant sustainability improvement while maintaining the quality and product characteristics that our customers trust,” concludes Annika Girod.

NYTEX black oils – a safe alternative to creosote in wood treatment

Creosote is a category of carbonaceous chemicals that has been used as a wood preservative since the 19th century. However, as it is a toxic and carcinogenic substance, there are good reasons to look for other options.
