Saving when paving – with Nynas bitumen
Championing more sustainable road building and maintenance, Nynas has an extensive, locally based production and distribution system for bitumen.
This enables Nynas to save energy and greenhouse gas emissions when delivering bitumen to 80 percent of cities and towns in Scandinavia, Finland, and the United Kingdom. Proximity to customers and an effective distribution chain are the keys to this sustainability success.
Bitumen is one of four business segments highlighted in a new study of the environmental impact of Nynas’ products compared with those of its rivals. Commissioned by Nynas but carried out by the independent researchers, Future Earth Analytics LLC, it concludes that the use of Nynas products saves both energy and greenhouse gas emissions compared with using alternative products on the studied markets.
“In the case of bitumen, the study focused exclusively on the energy and emissions savings made due to Nynas’ logistics network for bitumen. However, Nynas also offers several innovative bitumen products aimed at reducing lifecycle energy and emissions,” says Carl Hultin, Marketing Manager Bitumen, Nynas.
Used in huge quantities on roads, bitumen is best sourced locally, limiting the cost and environmental impact of transportation.
The study combined Net Energy Analysis (NEA) with quantified transportation emissions, enabling comparison of greenhouse gas and energy trade-offs between different bitumen distribution networks. It showed that Nynas’ distribution system saves both energy and greenhouse gas emissions compared with its main alternative suppliers in the market.
Aiming to be climate-neutral by 2050 and keen to reduce the environmental footprints of their products, Nynas is leading the way in sustainability and setting new standards for environmental responsibility.
