Brains of Nynas: Dr. Hugo Campelo

With more than 20 years of experience in the transformer industry, Hugo is a Technical Expert at Nynas specialising in transformer oil applications. He’s an avid traveller, a member of international working groups such as CIGRE and IEC, and a passionate FC Porto fan. Here’s what’s on his mind.

Dr. Hugo Campelo

With more than 20 years of experience in the transformer industry, Hugo Campelo holds a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering from the University of Porto, Portugal, specialising in thermal modelling of large shell-type power transformers. After beginning his research career in transformer thermal management, he joined Efacec in 2010, where he held several R&D and technology management positions. In 2023, Hugo joined Nynas as a Technical Expert focusing on transformer oil applications. He actively contributes to CIGRE Working Groups and is a member of IEC Spanish TC 10.

20% EXISTING CUSTOMERS

It often strikes me how brilliantly my colleagues at Nynas have, over the years, built and strengthened such a powerful brand. As a technical advisor, I primarily nurture relationships with our existing customers, staying alert to understand their evolving needs.

20% TECHNICAL CONTENT

Generating technical content is a constant part of my work. Participating in conferences and international working groups, such as CIGRE and IEC, requires steady focus on what the next article or presentation will be about. I often design new laboratory tests or develop the next innovation project. I learn continuously from all areas of Nynas and from the questions raised by our customers, striving to turn that insight into actionable knowledge for the transformer industry.

20% TRAVELLING

I often think about where the next stop will be and who from our sales team will lead the upcoming mission. My role is global, so you really have to enjoy travelling. I frequently plan these missions – I’m passionate about them and always try to combine them with a bit of personal enjoyment along the way.

20% NEW CUSTOMERS

I keep thinking about those customers who don’t yet know us, and how imagination and creativity are key to reaching them. You can often find me working with our sales colleagues, devising new ways to engage potential customers. The energy transition has brought electrification to nearly every sector. Electrical transformers are now ubiquitous, and their manufacturing industry is growing at unprecedented levels. Opportunities abound, but they require a clear identity and strong focus.

20% FAMILY AND FOOTBALL

Being Portuguese, perhaps only Fado is missing to complete the trio – though those songs feel too sad for someone who doesn’t believe in destiny. I often think about my wonderful family. I’m married and a father of three, and I love creating memories with each of them. They are my balance, my past and my future. And last but not least, they’re my favourite partners to watch and discuss FC Porto games with every week.
