Finding Resolution

A change in raw material or energy source may seem like the best route to a lower carbon footprint. However, with specialty products such as those in Nynas’ portfolio, which often contribute to lifetime, function, and performance in their use, it is more complex. Our ReSolution concept captures these benefits throughout the entire value chain.

Sustainability is a high priority in most industries. Some stakeholders believe it can only be achieved with a transition to bio-based or circular solutions.

“The reality, however, is often not that simple. Energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions related to use are also key aspects when it comes to the sustainability of a product,” explains Marika Rangstedt, Nynas Sustainability Manager.

Consequently, many companies have started to assess their greenhouse gas emissions throughout the entire value chain.

“When it comes to products that have a long useful life, the most positive effects are often achieved thanks to properties such as quality, performance, lifetime, and the possibility for circular product flow, as much as just focusing on the raw material,” adds Marika Rangstedt.

Nynas transformer oils have an expected lifetime of up to 50 years, at which point they can be fully recycled, while the company’s tyre and rubber oil may be in use for up to 15 years.

“To make it easier to identify and communicate the right sustainability benefits, we have created ReSolution, which is a framework to highlight products that can contribute to our customers’ sustainability efforts,” says Annika Girod, Nynas Marketing Director.

Enabling the sustainable transition

The ReSolution concept aims to make it easier for companies actively looking to find solutions that can help them achieve sustainable performance. Nynas products are selected on the basis that they provide tangible sustainability benefits compared to the norm or standard solutions used in the application. The products are grouped around four benefits: Reduce, Reinforce, Recirculate and Renew.

“One Reduce product is our naphthenic tyre oil NYTEX® 4700, which contributes to a 5% reduction in the rolling resistance index, thereby enhancing fuel economy while upholding traction performance at the highest level,” notes Annika Girod.

“Other examples include Nynas transformer oils that offer better cooling and minimise electrical losses, solutions for safer wood treatment, and naphthenic base oils that reduce energy and soap consumption in grease production.”

The possibility to combine performance and the right characteristics with bio-based or circular raw materials is, of course, a beneficial combination. Nynas offers a growing portfolio of such products that fall within the Renew and Recirculate categories.

“Over its lifetime, our circular transformer fluid NYTRO® RR 900X can offer a reduction of more than 70% in greenhouse gas emissions compared to a virgin transformer oil,” notes Marika Rangstedt. “It ensures excellent performance and complies with the most demanding quality standards.”

Then there is the virtually 100% bio-based hydrocarbon NYTRO BIO 300X. It is a premium transformer fluid with best-in-class cooling performance in addition to an exceptionally low carbon footprint.

The tyre oil NYTEX BIO 6200, which is made with bio-based raw material, is another noteworthy leap forward. It was awarded the top chemicals and compounding innovation of 2023 at the Tire Technology Expo.

Before the end of 2024, Nynas will launch a range of 11 new products in the Reduce category.

“We will offer our existing products with exactly the same performance, but a a reduced carbon footprint,” explains Annika Girod. “More on this next step in our work to support the sustainable transition will come soon.”

Nynas ReSolution

REDUCE
ENERGY, EMISSIONS, TEMPERATURE and OTHER RAW MATERIAL

The achievement of the different types of reductions in the product uses translate into benefits such as reduced CO2 emissions and less use of energy, electricity, fuels, other raw material or/and exposure to health and environmentally hazardous components.

REINFORCE
DURABILITY, PERFORMANCE and LIFETIME

A reinforced durability, performance or lifetime translates into benefits such as more efficient use of materials and longer product lifecycles. More from less.

RECIRCULATE
MATERIAL

Reusing and recycling products to new life after their primary (earlier) lifecycles translates into benefits such as reduced use of virgin material and reductions in net CO2 emissions over the product lifecycle.

RENEW
MATERIAL

Using renewable raw material translates into benefits such as avoided depletion of non-renewable resources and reductions in net lifecycle CO2 emissions through the CO2 sequestration of biogenic material.
